How to run a 20-minute Children’s Day quiz in class

With 30 to 40 children, a team quiz works far better than individual questions. Here is a plan that fits one period with time to spare.

Time What happens
0–3 min Make 5 or 6 teams of 4–6 children. Each team picks a name: Roses, Kites, Balloons, Stars, Rainbows, Smiles.
3–5 min Explain the rules: one answer per team, hands up before speaking, no shouting out.
5–17 min Play the rounds that suit your class. LKG–UKG: Round 1 plus a few true or false. Class 1: Rounds 2 and 4. Class 2: Rounds 3 and 4.
17–20 min Tie-breaker if needed, count points, cheer for every team, hand out certificates.

Scoring table

Draw this on the board and add tally marks as you go.

Situation Points
Correct answer on first try 2
Correct answer after a hint 1
Question passed to another team and answered correctly 1 (to that team)
Team works quietly and waits their turn 1 bonus per round
Wrong answer 0 (never take points away from little ones)

Tie-breakers

  • Fastest finger: “Count backwards from 10 to 1.” First team to finish correctly wins.
  • Closest guess: “How many balloons are in this bag?” Closest number wins.
  • Spell it: Class 1–2 teams spell R-O-S-E or K-I-T-E aloud.
  • Hindi word: “Say Children’s Day in Hindi.” (Bal Diwas)

Tips for a kind, mixed-ability quiz

  • Rotate who answers so quiet children get a turn. A soft toy can be passed as the “speaking token”.
  • For LKG and UKG, accept answers in Hindi, English or your home language.
  • Keep the mood light. If a team gets several wrong, give them an easy picture question next.
  • End with everyone saying “Happy Children’s Day!” together. On Children’s Day, everyone should feel like a winner.
