By Class 1, children are curious about everything: why the sun sets, what a tiger eats, why we celebrate Republic Day. GK (general knowledge) at this age is a lovely way to feed that curiosity — as long as it feels like a game, not a test. This post gives you Class 1 GK questions with answers in English, the same key questions in Hindi, and ideas for turning them into a quick quiz at home or in the classroom.

Quick answer: Class 1 GK usually covers:

- Our body and senses: five sense organs and what each does.
- Animals and plants: homes, babies, sounds and what plants need.
- Time: 7 days in a week, 12 months in a year, seasons.
- Helpers, transport, safety and festivals.
How to make GK fun for six-year-olds
Children of this age learn best through talk, pictures and movement. A few ideas that work well:
- Question of the day: ask one GK question at breakfast and the answer at dinner.
- Quiz show: take turns being the quizmaster. Let your child ask you questions too.
- Spot it outside: find a banyan tree in the park, or the flag on a government building.
- Draw it: after learning about the peacock, let your child draw and colour one.
Five to ten questions at a time is plenty. Revisit old ones often — children love answering questions they already know.

Frequently asked questions about Class 1 GK
What GK topics are covered in Class 1?
Most schools cover India basics such as national symbols and the capital, the human body and senses, animals and plants, days, months and seasons, community helpers, transport, road safety and festivals. The exact list depends on the school and the textbook used.
What is the national animal of India?
The national animal of India is the tiger. In Hindi it is called बाघ. The national bird is the peacock and the national flower is the lotus.
How can I teach GK to my Class 1 child at home?
Keep it light and regular. Ask one or two questions a day, link them to things your child sees, play quiz games where your child also asks questions, and use picture books. Short, cheerful practice works better than long memorisation sessions.
Should Class 1 GK be taught in English or Hindi?
Follow your school’s medium of instruction. Many families practise in both, which helps children connect the same idea across languages. For example, peacock is मोर and lotus is कमल.
What is the difference between the national anthem and the national song?
The national anthem of India is Jana Gana Mana, written by Rabindranath Tagore. The national song is Vande Mataram, written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee. Both are respected, and children usually learn to stand quietly while the anthem is sung.
