How to run an oral GK quiz for 5-year-olds

Most UKG children cannot yet read long questions, so GK questions for UKG students are mainly oral. A few tips make it fun rather than a test:

  • Use pictures. Hold up a picture of a cow and ask, “What does this animal give us?” Pictures help children who know the answer but cannot find the word.
  • Accept short answers. “Tiger” is a full answer. You do not need a complete sentence.
  • Give a clue, not the answer. “It is orange with black stripes…” usually does the trick.
  • Mix easy and new. Ask three questions they know and one new one. Success keeps them going.
  • Swap roles. Let your child ask you questions. They love catching grown-ups out.
  • In class: use thumbs up for yes and thumbs down for no, so every child answers at once.

UKG GK syllabus: what many schools cover

There is no single UKG GK syllabus in India. Most schools blend GK with EVS, and topics often include:

  • my body, five senses and good habits
  • my family and my home
  • animals: pet, farm, wild and water animals, their sounds, homes and young ones
  • plants, fruits and vegetables
  • transport and road safety
  • community helpers
  • seasons, day and night
  • national symbols and festivals of India
  • days of the week, months and colours of the rainbow

For the full UKG picture across subjects, see our UKG syllabus guide, and for picture-based EVS ideas, our UKG EVS worksheets post.

A weekly GK routine

Day Theme Activity
Monday Body and family Point and name: touch your nose, ears, elbow
Tuesday Animals Sound game: you make the sound, they name the animal
Wednesday Fruits and vegetables Kitchen hunt: find two fruits and two vegetables
Thursday Transport and helpers Spot them on a walk or in a picture book
Friday India and festivals Colour the flag or a national symbol
Saturday Mixed quiz Ten questions from the week, with stars for each answer

Keep each session to five or ten minutes. Repeat the same questions across weeks; repetition is how children remember.

LKG and UKG GK questions with answers: which level?

If your child finds these hard, go back to our LKG list, which uses simpler questions such as what colour a ripe banana is If they find them easy, try the Class 1 list, which goes further with India basics, special days, seasons and safety, and adds a set of GK questions in Hindi. Many families use LKG and UKG GK questions with answers together as one long revision list across both years.
