Hindi Reading for UKG: A 4-Week Plan from Letters to Two-Letter Words (With Daily Word Lists)

A 4-week, 10-minutes-a-day plan to move UKG children from Hindi letters to blending, two-letter words and short phrases, with word lists and meanings.

Many UKG children can point to every letter on a varnamala chart, yet freeze when you show them a word like बस. That gap is normal. Hindi reading for UKG is a separate skill: the child has to join two sounds into one word, and nobody has shown them how. The good news is that it only takes about ten minutes a day to teach.

Below is a 4-week plan that moves from letter sounds to blending, then to reading two-letter words and finally short phrases. Every word list is in Devanagari with transliteration and meaning, so parents who are less confident in Hindi can follow along too.

Quick answer: How to start Hindi reading for UKG:

  • Week 1: revise letter sounds (क is “k”, not “ka-ka”).
  • Week 2: blend two letters: क + म = कम.
  • Week 3: read 25 two-letter words a day, no matras.
  • Week 4: read two- and three-word phrases such as घर चल.
  • Keep it to 10 minutes, and stop while your child is still enjoying it.

Before you start: the hidden अ sound

Every Hindi consonant carries a short अ sound inside it. क is said “ka”, म is said “ma”. But when two letters make a word, the last अ usually goes quiet. So क + म is said “kam”, not “ka-ma”. बस is “bas”, not “ba-sa”.

This is the single biggest reason children get stuck. Tell your child: “The first letter keeps its a, the last letter whispers.” Then read कम together, stretching the first sound and closing the second: “kaaa-m”.

Your child should know most letters before you begin. If they don’t yet, spend a week or two with our Hindi varnamala chart with pictures first.

Week 1: sound review (10 minutes a day)

This week is about saying each letter as a short, clean sound. Focus on the letters that appear most in two-letter words:

क ख ग घ च छ ज ट ड त थ द ध न प फ ब भ म र ल व स ह

  • Day 1–2: point and say five letters at a time. Your child repeats.
  • Day 3–4: you say a sound, your child points to the letter.
  • Day 5: play “Which letter starts this word?” with घर, जल, फल, बस, नल.
  • Day 6–7: quick flash: show a letter for two seconds and see if your child can say it.

Watch for look-alike letters: ब and व, घ and ध, म and भ. Spend extra time on any pair your child mixes up.

Week 2: blending two letters

Now join two sounds. Write the two letters with a plus sign, say each one, then slide them together. Do 8–10 blends a day.

Blend Word Say Meaning
क + म कम kam less
ब + स बस bas bus / enough
घ + र घर ghar house
ज + ल जल jal water
फ + ल फल phal fruit
न + ल नल nal tap
ह + म हम ham we
स + ब सब sab all
क + प कप kap cup
छ + त छत chhat roof

A simple trick: put two letter cards a hand’s width apart. Say the first sound as you slide it towards the second, and say the whole word as they touch. Children love moving the cards themselves.

Week 3: UKG Hindi reading words (25 a day)

By now your child can blend. This week, read lists of whole words without the plus sign. Read the same list on Monday and Tuesday, a new list on Wednesday and Thursday, and mix both on Friday. Here is a ready list of 25 two-letter words without matras:

Word Say Meaning Word Say Meaning
अब ab now कब kab when
तब tab then कल kal yesterday / tomorrow
पल pal moment बल bal strength
हल hal plough चल chal walk / go
पर par on डर dar fear
हर har every कर kar do
मत mat don’t रथ rath chariot
रस ras juice दस das ten
गज gaj elephant सच sach truth
वन van forest मन man mind
धन dhan wealth तन tan body
मग mag mug टब tab tub
रख rakh keep

Add the 10 words from Week 2 and you have 35 words to rotate. Most children read 25 words in about four minutes by the end of the week. If your child is slow, that’s fine: accuracy first, speed later.

Daily Week 3 routine

  1. 2 minutes: read yesterday’s list once.
  2. 5 minutes: read today’s list. Your child points to each word.
  3. 2 minutes: you say a word, your child finds it.
  4. 1 minute: your child picks their favourite word and draws it.

Week 4: short phrases

Now put two or three words together. Reading a phrase that means something is a big moment for a child.

Phrase Say Meaning
घर चल ghar chal go home
जल भर jal bhar fill water
कप रख kap rakh put the cup down
मत डर mat dar don’t be afraid
सच कह sach kah tell the truth
फल चख phal chakh taste the fruit
दस कप das kap ten cups
सब फल sab phal all the fruits
अब घर चल ab ghar chal now go home
नल पर जल भर nal par jal bhar fill water at the tap

Act the phrases out. When your child reads मत डर, pretend to be scared and let them comfort you. Physical fun helps the words stick.

Hindi reading practice for kids: common problems and fixes

Problem Fix
Says “ba-sa” instead of “bas” Revisit the hidden अ: the last letter whispers
Reads letters but can’t join them Go back to Week 2 cards and slide them together
Guesses from the first letter Cover the first letter, read the second, then both
Mixes ब and व Point out the small line inside ब
Gets bored Shorten to 5 minutes and use flashcards as a game

How to teach Hindi reading at home: three games

  • Word hunt: stick 10 word cards around a room. Call out a word; your child runs to find and read it.
  • Snap: two copies of each word. Turn cards over; say “snap” and read the word when two match.
  • Train: lay words in a line on the floor. Your child “drives” along, reading each word to move forward.

Frequently asked questions

When should a UKG child start reading Hindi words?

Once your child knows most Hindi letters by sound, usually some time in UKG, they are ready to blend two letters into a word. There is no need to wait until every letter is perfect.

Why does my child read बस as ba-sa?

Because every letter carries a short a sound. In two-letter words the last a usually goes silent, so बस is said bas. Teach that the last letter whispers.

Should UKG children learn matras before reading?

No. Start with two-letter words that have no matra, such as घर, जल and बस. Matras come next, once blending feels easy.

How long should Hindi reading practice be each day?

About 10 minutes a day is enough for UKG. Short daily practice works much better than one long session at the weekend.

How many words should my child read in a day?

Start with 8 to 10 blends a day in Week 2. By Week 3, many children can read a list of 25 two-letter words in a few minutes.
