UKG Hindi Worksheets: What to Cover + Free Practice with Answers

Free UKG Hindi practice with answers: varnamala revision, two- and three-letter words without matras, aa ki matra and tiny sentences, laid out term by term.

If your child goes to an English-medium school, Hindi is often the subject that causes the most worry at home. The class speaks English all day, the Hindi period is short, and suddenly the diary says “revise matras” or “practise vakya banao”. Good UKG Hindi worksheets can close that gap, but only if they follow the right order: letters first, then words without matras, then the first matra, then tiny sentences.

Hindi Two & Three Letter Words Worksheets PDF – बिना मात्रा के शब्द, Blending & Sentences, Ages 5–7 (38 Pages)

This guide lays out what UKG Hindi usually covers term by term, explains each stage in plain English, and gives you free practice exercises with answers that you can copy into a notebook today. Every Hindi word below has its transliteration and meaning, so even if your own Hindi is rusty, you can sit with your child and check the work with confidence.

Quick answer: Most UKG Hindi worksheets follow four stages:

  • Varnamala revision: all स्वर (swar) and व्यंजन (vyanjan), matching each letter to a picture word.
  • Words without matras: two-letter words (घर, जल, फल) and then three-letter words (कमल, मटर, कलम).
  • The first matra: आ की मात्रा (ा), as in नाक, ताला, गाजर. Some schools also begin ि in Term 2.
  • Tiny sentences: arranging two to four words into a sentence, such as यह घर है।

What UKG Hindi worksheets cover, term by term

Every school sets its own pace, and boards do not publish a single UKG Hindi syllabus, so treat this as the order many schools commonly follow rather than an official plan. If your child’s school book is ahead or behind, simply start at the row that matches the diary. For the full picture across subjects, see our UKG syllabus guide.

When Focus Examples Typical worksheet tasks
Term 1, early Varnamala revision: 13 swar (अ to अः) and vyanjan (क to ज्ञ) अ से अनार, क से कबूतर tracing, missing letter, match letter to picture
Term 1, late Two-letter words with no matra घर, जल, फल, नल, बस blend and read, fill the missing letter, read and match
Term 2, early Three-letter words and tiny phrases कमल, मटर, नमक; घर चल blending boxes, jumbled letters, word families
Term 2, middle आ की मात्रा (ा) नाक, कान, ताला, गाजर add the matra, circle the matra word, read aloud
Term 2, end Vakya banao (make a sentence) यह घर है। arrange the words, read and circle, copy the sentence

Why this order? A child who reads घर (ghar) is already reading a real Hindi word using only letters they know. Matras add a new symbol and a new rule, so they are much easier once blending feels natural. That is exactly why words without matras (बिना मात्रा के शब्द) sit in the middle of UKG.

Stage 1: Varnamala revision (with answers)

Most UKG children have met the letters in LKG, but recognition is often patchy, especially with look-alike letters. Spend the first few weeks making sure your child can say each letter, find it in a row and link it to a word.

Exercise 1: Write the missing letter

  1. अ आ ___ ई
  2. क ख ___ घ
  3. च ___ ज झ
  4. त थ द ___ न
  5. प फ ब ___ म
  6. य र ___ व

Answers: 1. इ 2. ग 3. छ 4. ध 5. भ 6. ल

Exercise 2: Which letter does the word start with?

  1. अनार (anaar, pomegranate)
  2. कबूतर (kabootar, pigeon)
  3. घड़ी (ghadi, clock)
  4. मछली (machhli, fish)
  5. हाथी (haathi, elephant)
  6. तरबूज (tarbooz, watermelon)

Answers: 1. अ 2. क 3. घ 4. म 5. ह 6. त

Exercise 3: Look-alike letters

Say the word, then circle the correct first letter.

  1. घर (ghar, house): घ or ध?
  2. भालू (bhaalu, bear): भ or म?
  3. बत्तख (battakh, duck): ब or व?

Answers: 1. घ 2. भ 3. ब

If letters are still shaky, go back a step with our Hindi Varnamala Tracing Worksheets (₹99), which give one swar per page, two vyanjan per page, picture words and a full revision chart.

Stage 2: Words without matras

This is the big leap from knowing letters to reading. Show your child how two sounds slide together: ज… ल… जल. Say it slowly, then faster. For a much longer list, our post on two letter words in Hindi has dozens more with meanings.

Hindi word Say it Meaning
घर ghar house
जल jal water
फल phal fruit
नल nal tap
बस bas bus
छत chhat roof
कमल kamal lotus
कलम kalam pen
मटर matar peas
नमक namak salt
शहद shahad honey
महल mahal palace

Exercise 4: Join the letters

  1. ज + ल = ___
  2. ब + स = ___
  3. फ + ल = ___
  4. घ + र = ___
  5. न + ल = ___
  6. क + म + ल = ___

Answers: 1. जल 2. बस 3. फल 4. घर 5. नल 6. कमल

Exercise 5: Fill the missing letter

  1. ___र (house)
  2. ज___ (water)

  5. न___क (salt)

Answers: 1. घ (घर) 2. ल (जल) 3. त (छत) 4. ट (मटर) 5. म (नमक)

Exercise 6: Unjumble the letters

  1. र ट म (peas)
  2. क न म (salt)
  3. द ह श (honey)
  4. ल ह म (palace)

Answers: 1. मटर 2. नमक 3. शहद 4. महल

A lovely teaching moment: कमल (lotus) and कलम (pen) use the same three letters in a different order. Write both, read both, and ask your child which one you write with. Children remember this pair for years.

Stage 3: UKG Hindi worksheet for matra (आ की मात्रा)

The first matra most schools teach is आ की मात्रा, the standing line ा written straight after the letter. It makes the sound long: क (ka) becomes का (kaa). Show your child that the matra always comes after the letter and joins the शिरोरेखा (the top line).

Word Say it Meaning
नाक naak nose
कान kaan ear
ताला taala lock
माला maala garland
राजा raaja king
गाजर gaajar carrot
बादल baadal cloud
दादा daada grandfather (father’s father)

Exercise 7: Add the matra

  1. क + ा = ___
  2. म + ा = ___
  3. न___क (nose)
  4. त___ल___ (lock)
  5. ग___जर (carrot)

Answers: 1. का 2. मा 3. नाक 4. ताला 5. गाजर

Exercise 8: Circle the words with आ की मात्रा

नाक · घर · ताला · कलम · बादल · बस

Answers: नाक, ताला, बादल

When आ feels easy, move on one matra at a time. Our guide to Hindi matra worksheets explains the full sequence, and the Hindi Matra Worksheets PDF (₹99) covers all 10 matras with a बारहखड़ी chart.

Stage 4: UKG Hindi worksheet for vakya banao

Vakya banao means “make a sentence”. In UKG this usually means putting two to four words in the right order, or writing a very short sentence using a pattern like यह ___ है। (This is a ___.) Remind your child that a Hindi sentence ends with a पूर्ण विराम (।), the standing line full stop.

Exercise 9: Put the words in order

  1. है / घर / यह
  2. चल / घर / अमन
  3. भर / जल
  4. है / कलम / यह
  5. है / लाल / गाजर

Answers: 1. यह घर है। (This is a house.) 2. अमन, घर चल। (Aman, walk home.) 3. जल भर। (Fill the water.) 4. यह कलम है। (This is a pen.) 5. गाजर लाल है। (The carrot is red.)

Exercise 10: Make a sentence with each word

फल · बस · नाक

Example answers: यह फल है। · यह बस है। · यह नाक है। Any correct sentence counts, so praise a child who writes their own.

A simple UKG Hindi worksheet plan for Term 2

Term 2 is where many children in English-medium schools fall behind, because it moves from letters to reading. Ten minutes a day, four or five days a week, is enough if you follow a clear order.

Weeks Practise Daily routine (10 minutes)
1–2 Varnamala and two-letter words say 10 letters, read 5 words, trace 1 row
3–4 Three-letter words blend 5 words, 1 jumbled-letter puzzle
5–6 Phrases (घर चल, जल भर) read 3 phrases, copy 1
7–9 आ की मात्रा trace का to हा, read 5 matra words
10–12 Vakya banao and revision arrange 2 sentences, read aloud to a family member

Tips for parents in English-medium schools

  • Say sounds, not names. Teach क as “k” with a short a, the way it sounds inside words, so blending works.
  • Use Hindi at home in small doses. Name ten things every day in Hindi: नल, घर, फल, कप. Children read words faster when they already know them by ear.
  • Write on Hindi lines. Hindi letters hang from the शिरोरेखा. Draw a headline first, then write below it, so letters do not float.
  • Keep sessions short. Ten calm minutes beat forty tearful ones. Stop while your child still wants more.
  • Ask Hindi-speaking family to help. A grandparent reading three words on a video call is gold.
  • Check what the school book uses. Some books write ज्ञ, क्ष and त्र at the end of the vyanjan list; some add ड़ and ढ़. Follow your child’s book.

Frequently asked questions

What Hindi is taught in UKG?

Many schools revise the full varnamala in UKG, then teach two- and three-letter words without matras, the first matra (आ की मात्रा) and tiny sentences such as यह घर है। The exact order varies from school to school.

Are matras taught in UKG?

Many schools introduce आ की मात्रा in the second term of UKG, and a few also begin ि. Others wait until Class 1. Either is fine, as long as your child can blend words without matras first.

Should my child learn words without matras before matras?

Yes. Words without matras, such as घर, जल and कमल, use only letters your child already knows, so they can practise blending. Once blending is easy, adding a matra is a small extra step.

How can I help with Hindi if we speak English at home?

Name everyday things in Hindi, read three to five words a day together, write on lines with a headline, and keep sessions to about ten minutes. Transliteration and meanings beside each word help parents whose own Hindi is rusty.

Are these UKG Hindi worksheets CBSE?

They follow the order many CBSE, ICSE and state board schools commonly use, but they are not official board or NCERT material. Match the pages to what your child’s school book is teaching.
