What makes a good Children’s Day worksheet?

A Children’s Day activity should feel like a celebration, not a test. The day is about children: their play, their friendships and their dreams. So the best worksheets do three things:

  • They are short. Around five minutes a page for little ones. Two or three pages in a sitting is plenty for kindergarten.
  • They are about the child. Pages like “All About Me”, “My Dreams” and “My Favourite Games” let every child feel seen.
  • They mix skills. A colouring page, a counting page and a tracing page together give hands, eyes and minds a gentle workout.

Keep the facts simple. Children’s Day in India is on 14 November because it is the birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, who was born in 1889. He loved children, and children called him Chacha Nehru. He often wore a rose on his coat, which is why roses appear on so many Children’s Day pages.

Children’s Day worksheets for kindergarten

For Nursery, LKG and UKG, choose pages that build pencil control and colour recognition, with very little reading. Here is a simple plan you can follow with paper you already have.

Worksheet idea Best for Skill practised
Colour the kite Nursery – LKG colour recognition, grip
Count the balloons (1–10) Nursery – UKG counting, one-to-one matching
Trace “kite”, “play”, “smile” LKG – UKG letter formation
Draw my best friend Nursery – UKG drawing, talking about feelings
Help the child reach the kite (maze) LKG – Class 1 problem-solving, pencil control
Spot the difference UKG – Class 1 observation, concentration
Adding balloons (sums to 10) UKG – Class 1 early addition
All About Me UKG – Class 2 writing, self-expression

Tip for teachers: give the youngest children fat crayons and only one worksheet at a time. Put finished pages up on a “Happy Children’s Day” wall so children can show their parents at pick-up time.

Children’s Day vocabulary: 14 words with simple meanings

Use this table for a vocabulary lesson, a matching worksheet or a spelling list. Read each word aloud, say the meaning, then ask a child to use it in a sentence. For UKG, pick five words. For Class 1 and 2, use them all.

Word Simple meaning Example sentence

birthday the day a person was born 14 November is Nehru ji’s birthday.

happy feeling good and glad I feel happy on Children’s Day.

Three quick vocabulary activities

  • Match it. Write six words on the left of a page and six simple pictures on the right (kite, rose, balloon, gift, smile, friend). Children draw lines to match.
  • Fill the gap. Write sentences with a missing word: “I fly a ____.” “I ____ my toys.” Put the word bank at the top.
  • Say it, show it. Call out a word; children act it out. “Smile!” “Fly a kite!” “Share!” Great for a noisy, happy start to the lesson.

Children’s Day word search: make your own in 10 minutes

A Children’s Day word search is one of the easiest worksheets to make by hand. Use this word list, which uses short, familiar words suitable for Class 1 and 2:

Word list: KITE, ROSE, PLAY, FUN, GIFT, CAKE, SMILE, FRIEND, DREAM, GAMES, HAPPY, NEHRU

How to make it:

  1. Draw a grid of 10 by 10 squares on A4 paper using a ruler. For UKG, use an 8 by 8 grid and only 6 words.
  2. Write the words in capital letters, one letter per square. Start with the longest words (FRIEND, DREAM, HAPPY, SMILE).
  3. For Class 1, write words only left to right and top to bottom. For Class 2, you can add one or two diagonal words.
  4. Fill the empty squares with random letters. Avoid accidentally spelling rude or confusing words.
  5. Write the word list below the grid with a small box next to each word so children can tick it off.
  6. Make one answer copy with the words circled in pencil, so you can check quickly.

For younger children, add a tiny picture next to each word in the list. This turns the word search into a reading exercise too, because children match the picture to the written word before hunting for it.

Children’s Day reading comprehension (free passage + answers)

Here is a short, original reading passage written in simple English for Class 1 and Class 2. Teachers often search for a Children’s Day reading comprehension PDF; you can copy this passage into a document, print it on A4 and add the questions below. It is about 120 words.

Passage: Riya’s Children’s Day

Today is 14 November. It is Children’s Day. Riya wakes up early. She is very happy. At school, the classroom is full of balloons. The teachers sing a song for the children. Riya’s teacher tells a story about Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. He was the first Prime Minister of India. He loved children very much. Children called him Chacha Nehru. He liked to wear a red rose on his coat. After the story, the children play games. Riya plays kho-kho with her friends. Then everyone draws a picture of their dream. Riya draws herself as a pilot in the sky. At home, she tells her mother about her day. “It was the best day,” says Riya with a big smile.

Questions

  1. When is Children’s Day?
  2. Who sings a song for the children?
  3. What did Pandit Nehru like to wear on his coat?
  4. Which game does Riya play with her friends?
  5. What does Riya want to be when she grows up?

Answers

  1. Children’s Day is on 14 November.
  2. The teachers sing a song for the children.
  3. He liked to wear a red rose on his coat.
  4. Riya plays kho-kho with her friends.
  5. Riya wants to be a pilot.

Extension for Class 2: ask children to find three naming words (nouns) in the passage, such as balloons, story and rose, and to write two sentences about their own dream. For more practice in writing a few lines about a picture, see our guide to picture composition for Class 1.

Children’s Day activities for the English class

If you teach English to Class 1 or 2, Children’s Day is a lovely chance to practise speaking and writing in a relaxed way. These ideas need nothing more than paper and pencils.

1. My Dream sentence starters

Write “When I grow up, I want to be a ____ because ____.” on the board. Children fill it in and draw a picture. Give a word bank: doctor, teacher, pilot, farmer, singer, scientist, cricketer, artist.

2. Compliment circle

Children sit in a circle. Each child says one kind sentence to the child on their right: “You are a good friend.” “You draw nicely.” This practises full sentences and makes the whole class feel warm.

3. Acrostic poem

Write CHILD or SMILE down the side of the page. Children write one word or a short phrase for each letter. For example, S for sunny, M for mango, I for ice cream, L for laughing, E for everyone.

4. Favourite game show-and-tell

Each child names their favourite game and says two lines about it: “My favourite game is stapu. I play it with my sister.” Older children can write the lines too.

5. Thank-you card

Children make a simple folded card for a friend, a parent or a helper at school, and write “Thank you for ____.” Good for handwriting and for kindness.

6. Rhyme time

Give one Children’s Day word and ask for rhymes: kite (bite, white, night), play (day, say, may), fun (sun, run, bun). This links nicely with phonics work and our CVC words list for early readers.

Free printable Children’s Day colouring ideas for kids

Colouring is the heart of most preschool Children’s Day activities. If you are drawing your own colouring pages, or looking for preschool colouring pages to print as a PDF, these themes work beautifully for little ones:

  • Friends playing together on a swing, a slide or in a park.
  • Flying kites with long tails on a sunny day.
  • A rose and a rosebud, a simple way to talk about Chacha Nehru.
  • Balloons and a party with a cake and streamers.
  • Children’s games like a hopscotch grid, a cricket bat and ball, or a spinning top.
  • “Happy Children’s Day” in bubble letters for children to colour and decorate.
  • A self-portrait frame where the child draws their own face inside a star.

When drawing your own pages, use thick, dark outlines and big spaces. Nursery children cannot colour small details yet, and that is perfectly fine. One large kite on a page is better than five tiny ones.

Colouring is also a good moment to chat. Ask: “Who is your best friend?” “What games do you like?” “What makes you smile?” These little conversations are a big part of what Children’s Day is about.
