Place Value Worksheets for Class 1 and 2: Tens and Ones, Expanded Form (with Answers)

Teach tens and ones with bundles of sticks and ₹10 notes, then hundreds and expanded form for Class 2, with 20 practice questions and answers.

Place value is the idea that a digit’s value depends on where it sits. In 35, the 3 means three tens (30) and the 5 means five ones. It sounds simple to adults, but it is one of the big ideas in class 1 maths place value lessons, and children who really understand it find carrying, borrowing and big numbers much easier later.

Class 1 Maths Worksheets PDF – Numbers to 100, Addition, Subtraction, Money & Time (49 Pages)

This guide shows you how to teach tens and ones with things you already have at home, gives tables for numbers to 99, introduces hundreds for Class 2, explains expanded form and the difference between place value and face value, and ends with 20 practice questions with checked answers. Everything can be copied straight into a notebook.

Quick answer:

  • Place value tells you what each digit is worth. In 47, the 4 is worth 40 and the 7 is worth 7.
  • Teach with real objects first: bundles of 10 sticks, ₹10 notes and ₹1 coins, or abacus beads.
  • Class 1: tens and ones to 99. Class 2: hundreds, tens and ones to 999, and expanded form.
  • Watch for: writing 305 for thirty-five, or 78 for seven hundred and eight.

Class 1 maths place value: start with bundles of 10

Children understand tens when they can hold them. Before any worksheet, spend a few days with objects.

Bundles of sticks

Collect 50 ice-cream sticks, matchsticks with the heads removed, or straws. Count out 10 and wrap a rubber band round them. That is one ten. Ask your child to make 3 bundles and add 5 loose sticks. Count together: 10, 20, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35. “Three tens and five ones make 35.”

₹10 notes and ₹1 coins

Money makes place value real. Use play money or draw notes on paper. ₹47 is four ₹10 notes and seven ₹1 coins. Set up a small shop at home and ask your child to pay exact amounts like ₹23 or ₹58 using only tens and ones.

Abacus beads

A simple abacus with two rods (tens and ones) shows that the same bead is worth more on a different rod. One bead on the tens rod is 10; one bead on the ones rod is 1. Ask your child to show 61 and 16 and notice how different they look.

Tens and ones worksheet: tables for numbers to 99

Once objects make sense, move to tables. Draw a tens and ones chart with two columns and fill a few rows together.

Number Tens Ones Number name
14 1 4 fourteen
27 2 7 twenty-seven
35 3 5 thirty-five
40 4 0 forty
58 5 8 fifty-eight
63 6 3 sixty-three
79 7 9 seventy-nine
86 8 6 eighty-six
99 9 9 ninety-nine

Point out two patterns. First, the ones digit never goes above 9; once we have 10 ones, we make a new ten. Second, numbers like 40 have 0 ones, and the 0 is important. If number names are still shaky, practise with our number names 1 to 100 list.

Place value worksheets for Class 1: three quick formats

  1. Draw and count: draw tens as long rods and ones as small dots. Your child writes the number. Example: 2 rods and 6 dots = 26.
  2. Split the number: 52 = __ tens __ ones.
  3. Build the number: 7 tens 1 one = __.

Ten questions a day is plenty. Mix the formats so children have to think rather than copy a pattern.

Place value and face value

Class 1 and Class 2 books often ask for both, and children mix them up.

  • Face value is the digit itself. The face value of 6 in 64 is 6.
  • Place value is what the digit is worth in its place. The place value of 6 in 64 is 60, because it is in the tens place.
Number Digit Face value Place value
64 6 6 60
64 4 4 4
91 9 9 90
375 3 3 300
375 7 7 70

A simple way to say it: “Face value is the face you see. Place value is what it is worth in its house.”

Expanded form for Class 2

Expanded form writes a number as the sum of its place values. It is the same idea as tens and ones, just written as an addition sum.

  • 48 = 40 + 8
  • 90 = 90 + 0
  • 256 = 200 + 50 + 6
  • 407 = 400 + 0 + 7 (some books write 400 + 7)
  • 830 = 800 + 30 + 0

Children who understand expanded form find carrying and borrowing much easier, because they can see that the tens column really holds tens.

Hundreds, tens and ones worksheet (Class 2)

In Class 2, many schools extend place value to 999. Use 10 bundles of 10 sticks tied together into one big bundle of 100, or ₹100 notes with ₹10 notes and ₹1 coins.

Number Hundreds Tens Ones Expanded form
132 1 3 2 100 + 30 + 2
405 4 0 5 400 + 0 + 5
560 5 6 0 500 + 60 + 0
718 7 1 8 700 + 10 + 8
999 9 9 9 900 + 90 + 9

Place value also helps when comparing numbers: look at the hundreds first, then the tens, then the ones. Our greater than less than worksheet guide uses exactly this method.

Answers

Q Answer Q Answer
1 4 tens 7 ones 11 19
2 35 12 5
3 9 tens 0 ones 13 56
4 60 14 ₹34
5 8 15 3 hundreds 4 tens 5 ones
6 80 16 700 + 0 + 8
7 5 17 562
8 60 + 4 18 60
9 73 19 400
10 4 tens 2 ones (42 is greater than 29) 20 207

Common place value mistakes

  • Writing 305 for thirty-five. The child writes 30, then adds 5 after it. Go back to the tens and ones chart: thirty-five is 3 tens and 5 ones, so only two boxes.
  • Writing 78 for seven hundred and eight. The zero in the tens place goes missing. Use a three-column H/T/O chart and say “no tens, so write 0”.
  • Reversing digits: 53 for 35, especially with pairs like 17 and 71. Say the number slowly and build it with sticks.
  • Confusing place value and face value. Use the “face you see, worth in its house” line.
  • More than 9 ones. A child writes 2 tens 12 ones. Praise the counting, then show how 10 of those ones make another ten: 3 tens 2 ones = 32.

Frequently asked questions

What is place value in Class 1 maths?

Place value means each digit has a value based on its position. In 35, the 3 is in the tens place and is worth 30, and the 5 is in the ones place and is worth 5.

What is the difference between place value and face value?

Face value is the digit itself. Place value is what the digit is worth in its position. In 64, the face value of 6 is 6 and its place value is 60.

How do I teach tens and ones at home?

Use bundles of 10 sticks with loose sticks, or ₹10 notes with ₹1 coins. Build numbers with objects first, then move to a tens and ones chart.

What is the expanded form of 708?

The expanded form of 708 is 700 + 0 + 8. Some books write it as 700 + 8.

Why does my child write 305 for thirty-five?

The child is writing 30 and then 5 next to it. Show with sticks that thirty-five is 3 tens and 5 ones, which needs only two digits.
