Looking for a Children’s Day poem for kids that a small child can actually say on stage without freezing? The best poems for 14 November are short, bouncy and full of words children already know: balloons, kites, roses, friends and smiles. Long, grown-up poems sound lovely on paper, but a four-year-old will forget them halfway through.

Short poems on Children’s Day in English for Nursery and LKG
Poem 1: Balloons Up High (4 lines)
Balloons up high, red and blue,
Children’s Day is here for you!
Clap your hands and jump with me,
Happy as a child can be!
Actions: point up, then point to the audience, clap twice, jump once, then a big smile with arms open.
Poem 2: One Red Rose (4 lines)
One red rose, one big smile,
Let’s all play for a little while.
Fourteen November, shout hooray,
It’s our happy Children’s Day!
Actions: hold up one finger, then touch the corners of your smile, wave both hands on “hooray”.
Poem 3: My Kite (4 lines)
My kite goes up, up, up so high,
A paper bird across the sky.
I hold the string and laugh and run,
Children’s Day is full of fun!
Actions: raise one hand step by step, flap arms like a bird, pretend to pull a string, run on the spot.
Poem 4: Let’s Share (4 lines)
I have a kite, you have a ball,
Let’s take turns and play with all.
Holding hands, we make a ring,
Children’s Day, let’s dance and sing!
Actions: this one works beautifully for a group of four to six children who hold hands and turn in a circle on the last two lines.

Poem 5: We Are the Children (8 lines)
We are the children, small and bright,
We learn by day, we dream at night.
We share our crayons, share our ball,
We help a friend who’s had a fall.
We sing, we paint, we count to ten,
We fall, we try, we rise again.
So here’s a cheer, hip hip hooray,
For every child on Children’s Day!
Actions: point to yourself, rest your head on your hands for “night”, hold out a hand to help, count fingers, crouch then stand tall, and cheer.
Poem 6: When I Grow Up (8 lines, poem for Class 1)
When I grow up, what will I be?
A farmer planting mango trees,
A pilot flying past the clouds,
A singer singing to the crowds,
A teacher with a box of chalk,
A doctor helping people walk.
But for today, I’m glad to stay
A child who plays on Children’s Day!
Actions: one action per job (digging, wings out, holding a mic, writing on a board, listening with a stethoscope), then a happy spin on the last line. Children can swap in their own dream job.
Poem 7: Chacha Nehru’s Rose (8 lines)
Chacha Nehru wore a rose,
Fresh and red, as each one knows.
He loved the children, big and small,
And dreamed of learning for us all.
His birthday comes as winter starts,
We celebrate with songs and arts.
On fourteen November we stop to say,
Thank you, and Happy Children’s Day!
Actions: pin an imaginary rose on your shirt, show “big” and “small” with hands, open an imaginary book, fold hands for “thank you”. A paper rose makes a lovely prop.

Poem 8: Our Promise (12 lines)
Today our classroom feels brand new,
With paper chains of red and blue.
Our teachers sing, our teachers play,
They’ve swapped their roles for just one day.
We think of children far and near
Who need a book, a friend, a cheer.
May every child have food to eat,
A school to go to, shoes for feet.
So here’s our promise, small but true:
We’ll share and care the whole year through,
Not just on one November day,
But every day, in every way.
Actions: keep these gentle for an older child: sweep an arm round the room, point far away, place a hand on the heart for the promise. Two children can share it, six lines each.
Children’s Day poem in Hindi (Bal Diwas poem)

| Hindi | Transliteration | Meaning |

| खुशियाँ लेकर आया है। | khushiyaan lekar aaya hai. | it has come bringing joy. |

| सबके मन को भाया है। | sabke man ko bhaaya hai. | has pleased everyone’s heart. |
| लाल गुलाब, रंग-बिरंगे गुब्बारे, | laal gulaab, rang-birange gubbaare, | red roses, colourful balloons, |

Recitation tips for shy children
- Pick a short poem. A confident 4-line poem is better than a shaky 12-line one.
- Use actions. Movements act as memory hooks and give nervous hands something to do.
- Practise to a soft toy audience. Line up teddies and dolls, then add family members one at a time.
- Look at one friendly face. Tell your child to find you, their teacher or a friend in the crowd.
- Breathe before starting. Smell the flower, blow the candle: one slow breath in and out.
- Allow a prompt card. A small card with the first word of each line is perfectly fine.
- Pair up. Very shy children often manage beautifully when reciting with a friend.
- Praise the effort. Say “You stood up and spoke. That was brave,” whatever happens on the day.
One-week practice plan
| Day | What to do (5–10 minutes) |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Read the poem aloud together twice. Talk about what it means. |
| Day 2 | Learn lines 1 and 2 with actions. For longer poems, learn the first four lines. |
| Day 3 | Add the next lines. Play “I say a line, you say the next line”. |
| Day 4 | Say the whole poem with actions. Clap the rhythm together. |
| Day 5 | Recite to the toy audience, then to one family member. |
| Day 6 | Practise standing up, facing the room, with a loud, slow voice. |
| Day 7 | Final run-through once, then rest. Tell your child you are proud of them. |
Write your own: a C-H-I-L-D-R-E-N acrostic frame
An acrostic poem starts each line with a letter of a word. It is a wonderful Class 1 and Class 2 activity because there is no need to rhyme. Write CHILDREN down the left side of a page and let children fill in a line for each letter. Here is a frame with sample lines:
| Letter | Starter idea | Sample line |
|---|---|---|
| C | Colours, Clap, Chacha | Colours fill our classroom walls |
| H | Happy, Hands, Hello | Happy hands that help a friend |
| I | I, Ice cream, Ideas | Ideas that are big and bright |
| L | Laugh, Learn, Love | Laughing as we run and play |
| D | Dream, Dance, Draw | Dreaming of the stars at night |
| R | Rose, Run, Rainbow | Roses red for Chacha Nehru |
| E | Every, Explore, Eat | Every child is special |
| N | November, New, Nice | November fourteen is our day |
Younger children can dictate their lines while you write. If children enjoy finding rhymes for their poems, our list of rhyming words for Class 1 helps.

Frequently asked questions
Which Children’s Day poem is best for a nursery child?
Choose a 4-line poem with a clear rhyme and one action per line, such as Balloons Up High or One Red Rose. Three or four days of short practice is usually enough.
How long should a Children’s Day poem for Class 1 be?
About 8 lines is ideal for Class 1. It is long enough to feel like a real performance and short enough to learn in under a week with actions.
Is there a simple Children’s Day poem in Hindi?
Yes. The 8-line Bal Diwas poem on this page uses simple Hindi, with transliteration and meaning for every line so parents can help children practise.
How can I help my shy child recite a poem on stage?
Pick a short poem, add actions, practise to a row of soft toys, let your child look at one friendly face, and allow a small prompt card. Praise the effort, not perfection.
Why do we celebrate Children’s Day on 14 November?
14 November is the birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, born in 1889. He was fond of children, who called him Chacha Nehru.
