Winter Season for Kids: Worksheet Ideas, 10 Lines, Winter Clothes and Foods (UKG–Class 1)

India-specific winter learning for UKG and Class 1: clothes vocabulary with Hindi words, winter foods and festivals, 10 lines on winter and DIY sheets with answers.

Out come the sweaters, the mufflers and the tins of til laddoo. Winter is one of the easiest seasons to teach because children feel it on their skin every morning. A good winter season worksheet for kids takes that real experience (cold hands, foggy mornings, hot soup) and turns it into simple vocabulary, sorting and sentences.

Winter season for kids: explained in simple words

Children often ask, “Why is it cold now?” Here is an explanation a five- or six-year-old can follow:

In winter, the sun stays lower in the sky and the days are shorter. The sun shines on us for less time, so the ground and the air do not get as warm. That is why mornings and nights feel so cold.

For Class 1, you can add one more idea: the Earth is a little tilted. For a few months each year, our part of the Earth leans away from the sun, and we get winter. You can show this with a torch and a ball in a dark room, but keep it light. The main thing at this age is noticing what changes in winter.

What changes in winter?

  • Mornings are cold and sometimes foggy.
  • The sun rises later and sets earlier, so days are short and nights are long.
  • We wear warm, woollen clothes.
  • We enjoy hot food and drinks.
  • In the hills, some places get snow.
  • Many trees look dull, and some shed leaves.

Winter in north India and south India

India is a big country, so winter does not feel the same everywhere. This is a lovely talking point, especially in classes with children from different states.

North India South India
How cold? Cold to very cold, especially in December and January Mild and pleasant in most places, cooler at night
Weather Fog in the plains; snow in hill areas such as Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand Mostly sunny; some areas such as parts of Tamil Nadu get rain early in winter
Clothes Sweaters, jackets, caps, mufflers, gloves, quilts at night Light sweater or shawl in the morning and evening
Hill stations Shimla, Manali, Gulmarg can be freezing Ooty and Munnar get chilly, especially at night

Ask children: “Is winter very cold where we live?” There is no wrong answer, and it builds observation skills.

Winter season worksheet for kids: winter clothes

Winter clothes are the most common topic in a winter worksheet, and a winter clothes worksheet is easy to make at home. Teach the words with real clothes from the cupboard first.

Clothes What it keeps warm Hindi word
sweater body and arms स्वेटर (svetar)
jacket body, worn outside जैकेट (jaiket)
muffler / scarf neck and ears मफ़लर (maflar)
woollen cap head and ears ऊनी टोपी (oonee topee)
gloves hands दस्ताने (dastaane)
socks feet मोज़े (moze)
shawl shoulders and body शॉल (shawl)
blanket / quilt whole body at night कंबल (kambal) / रज़ाई (razaai)

DIY sheet 1: Circle the winter clothes

Draw eight clothes: sweater, raincoat, cap, shorts, gloves, umbrella, muffler, cotton frock. Ask your child to circle what we wear in winter.

Answer: sweater, woollen cap, gloves, muffler. (Raincoat and umbrella are for the rainy season; shorts and a cotton frock suit summer.)

DIY sheet 2: Match the season to the clothes

Write three seasons on the left and draw clothes on the right. Children draw lines.

  • Summer → cotton clothes and a cap. Answer: match
  • Rainy season → raincoat and umbrella. Answer: match
  • Winter → sweater and muffler. Answer: match

DIY sheet 3: Dress the child

Draw a simple child outline. Ask your child to draw and colour a cap, a sweater, gloves and socks. This is open-ended, so any careful drawing is a good answer.

Winter foods children love

Food makes winter memorable. Many winter foods are seasonal and help children connect the season with taste and smell.

  • Til laddoo (sesame and jaggery sweet), often made for Makar Sankranti.
  • Gajar ka halwa, made with the red winter carrots of north India.
  • Peanuts (moongphali) and chikki.
  • Sarson ka saag with makki ki roti, a Punjabi winter favourite.
  • Hot soup, haldi doodh (turmeric milk) and ginger tea for grown-ups.
  • Winter fruits: oranges, guava, amla and strawberries.
  • Winter vegetables: carrots, peas, cauliflower, spinach, methi and radish.

DIY sheet 4: Winter food or summer food?

Write these words and ask children to sort them: gajar ka halwa, ice cream, til laddoo, watermelon, hot soup, nimbu pani.

Answer: Winter: gajar ka halwa, til laddoo, hot soup. Summer: ice cream, watermelon, nimbu pani.

Winter festivals in India

Festival When What children might see
Christmas 25 December a Christmas tree, stars, carols and cake
Lohri usually 13 January a bonfire, popcorn, peanuts and rewri, mostly in Punjab and north India
Makar Sankranti around 14 January kite flying and til laddoo; called Uttarayan in Gujarat

Healthy winter habits

Winter is a natural time to talk about staying healthy:

  • Wear warm clothes, especially in the early morning and at night.
  • Wash hands with soap before eating, as coughs and colds spread easily.
  • Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.
  • Drink water even when you do not feel thirsty.
  • Play outside in the sunshine every day.
  • Stay away from heaters and fires. Grown-ups should never leave a coal angithi burning in a closed room, as the fumes are dangerous.
