Hindi Worksheets for Nursery: Swar Tracing, Matching and First Letters

A realistic guide to Hindi for 3 and 4 year olds, with the swar list and picture words, a 12-week plan and free tracing and matching exercises.

Many parents start looking for Hindi worksheets for nursery when the school diary first mentions अ, आ, इ. It is an exciting moment, but it helps to be realistic: a three- or four-year-old is still learning to hold a crayon, and Hindi letters have curves, loops and a headline that even older children find tricky. The goal in nursery is not writing perfect letters. It is getting familiar with how Hindi sounds and looks.

Hindi Varnamala Tracing Worksheets PDF – Swar & Vyanjan (स्वर और व्यंजन) with Picture Words, Ages 3–6 (48 Pages)

Below you will find what Hindi a nursery child can comfortably do, a week-by-week plan, free tracing and matching exercises you can make at home in minutes, the full list of स्वर (swar) with picture words, and tips that keep Hindi time happy rather than stressful.

Quick answer: Good Hindi worksheets for nursery (ages 3–4) focus on:

  • Line warm-ups: standing lines, the headline (शिरोरेखा), curves and circles before any letter.
  • Swar recognition: hearing and spotting अ to अः, not writing all of them perfectly.
  • Big tracing: one large dotted letter per page with a picture word, such as अ से अनार.
  • Matching: letter to picture, same letter to same letter.

What Hindi can a 3 or 4 year old really do?

Every child is different, and schools vary a lot. Some nurseries only sing Hindi rhymes; others trace the swar by the end of the year. Our nursery syllabus guide shows how Hindi fits alongside English, numbers and EVS. As a rough guide:

Age Comfortable Can wait
3 years Hindi rhymes, naming pictures in Hindi, scribbling lines, colouring a big letter, pointing to अ when asked tracing small letters, vyanjan, writing on lines
3½ years Line warm-ups with a crayon, matching the same letter, saying अ से अनार, आ से आम writing letters without dots, matras
4 years Tracing big dotted swar, matching letter to picture, recognising most of अ to अः, first vyanjan such as क reading words, joined letters, matras

So a good Hindi worksheet for a 3 year old is mostly colouring, pointing and big lines. A Hindi worksheet for a 4 year old can add tracing and matching. If your child is not ready, simply wait a few weeks and try again. For more ideas at this age, see our list of worksheets for 3 year olds.

Hindi worksheet swar for nursery: the list with picture words

Most schools teach 13 swar in nursery and LKG. Here they are with a common picture word for each. Say the letter, then the word, then point to the picture.

Swar Picture word Say it Meaning
अ अनार anaar pomegranate
आ आम aam mango
इ इमली imli tamarind
ई ईख eekh sugarcane
उ उल्लू ullu owl
ऊ ऊन oon wool
ऋ ऋषि rishi sage
ए एड़ी edi heel
ऐ ऐनक ainak spectacles
ओ ओखली okhli mortar (for pounding)
औ औरत aurat woman
अं अंगूर angoor grapes
अः (no picture word) ah usually just said aloud

Some school books list 11 swar and treat अं and अः separately, and some use different picture words, for example ए से एक (one). Follow whatever your child’s school uses so the two do not clash. If you want to see where these letters lead later on, our Hindi barakhadi chart shows how swar sounds become matras.

A week-by-week plan for nursery Hindi

Short and regular works best: five minutes a day, four days a week. This 12-week plan suits a four-year-old; for a three-year-old, stretch each step over two weeks.

Week Focus Activity
1 Standing and sleeping lines rain lines from clouds, a road for a car
2 The headline and curves draw a “roof” line, then curves hanging from it
3 अ and आ colour a big अ, trace it in a sand tray, find अनार and आम pictures
4 इ and ई trace, then match इ to इमली
5 उ and ऊ trace, owl craft for उल्लू
6 Revision of अ to ऊ letter hunt on a chart, matching game
7 ए and ऐ trace, point to your एड़ी (heel)
8 ओ and औ trace, match pictures
9 अं, अः and ऋ look and say, trace with a finger
10 All swar circle the letter, same-letter matching
11 First vyanjan: क, ख, ग क से कबूतर (pigeon), ख से खरगोश (rabbit), ग से गमला (flower pot)
12 Celebrate make a swar book with one letter and drawing per page

Free tracing worksheet for nursery in Hindi (make it at home)

You do not need a printer for a good first tracing page. Here is how to make one in five minutes:

  1. Take a plain A4 sheet and turn it sideways.
  2. Draw one thick horizontal line near the top third. This is the शिरोरेखा (headline). Explain that Hindi letters “hang” from it like clothes on a line.
  3. Below the headline, write one very big letter, about the height of your child’s palm, using dots spaced a finger apart.
  4. Put a green dot where the stroke starts and a small arrow showing the direction.
  5. Under the big letter, draw two more rows of the same letter, a little smaller.
  6. In the corner, draw a simple picture of the word (a mango for आ) and let your child colour it.

Use a thick crayon rather than a pencil at this age. Slide the page into a plastic sleeve and use a whiteboard marker if you want to reuse it.

Line warm-up page

Before letters, give one page of lines that Hindi letters are built from. Draw four rows: standing lines (rain falling from clouds), sleeping lines (a road under a car), the headline joined to standing lines (like a gate), and small curves (like the top of अ). Children trace each row from left to right.

Hindi worksheet for matching for nursery (free exercises)

Matching builds recognition without any writing at all, which makes it perfect for three-year-olds. Copy these into a notebook or onto cards.

Exercise 1: Match the letter to the picture

Write the letters in one column and draw the pictures in a jumbled order in the other. Your child draws a line from letter to picture.

Letter Pictures (jumbled)
अ owl
आ grapes
इ pomegranate
उ mango
अं tamarind

Answers: अ – pomegranate (अनार), आ – mango (आम), इ – tamarind (इमली), उ – owl (उल्लू), अं – grapes (अंगूर).

Exercise 2: Circle the same letter

Write a row and ask your child to circle every अ:

अ · आ · अ · इ · अ · उ

Answer: 3 times (1st, 3rd and 5th).

Then try: ई · इ · ई · ई · ऊ (circle every ई). Answer: 3 times.

Exercise 3: Which one is different?

उ · उ · ऊ · उ

Answer: ऊ (the third one). This is a good way to show that उ and ऊ look similar but are not the same.

Exercise 4: Sound game (no paper)

Say three words and ask, “Which one starts with आ?” For example: आम, घर, कप. Answer: आम. Then: इमली, बस, जल (which one starts with इ?). Answer: इमली.

Hands-on Hindi for little ones

Worksheets work best mixed with play. Try these alongside any page:

  • Sand or sooji tray: spread semolina on a steel plate and trace अ with a finger.
  • Atta dough letters: roll snakes of dough and shape them into आ.
  • Letter of the day: stick one swar on the fridge and say its word every time you open it.
  • Rhymes: familiar Hindi rhymes such as मछली जल की रानी है build an ear for the sounds before reading.
  • Picture talk: point to things at home and name them in Hindi: आम, अनार, अंगूर.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Starting with vyanjan. Swar come first in almost every school book, and they appear in the matras your child will learn later.
  • Writing from the bottom up. Show the start dot every time. Most Hindi strokes begin near the headline and move down.
  • Drawing the headline first on every letter. Many teachers ask children to write the letter body first and add the शिरोरेखा at the end. Check what your child’s school prefers and stick to one way.
  • Too many letters at once. Two new letters a week is plenty for a nursery child.
  • Using tiny worksheets. Letters for three- and four-year-olds should be big, about the size of a palm.

Tips that keep Hindi time happy

  • Stop at five minutes. Little attention spans tire fast, especially with a new script.
  • Trace with a finger first. Then with a crayon. Pencils can wait until LKG.
  • Praise effort, not neatness. A wobbly अ is a real achievement at three.
  • Do not rush vyanjan. If swar are still confusing, there is no hurry. Many schools start vyanjan properly in LKG.
  • Keep it bilingual. It is fine to explain in English and say the letter in Hindi.

Frequently asked questions

What Hindi should a nursery child learn?

Most nursery children work on line warm-ups, Hindi rhymes and recognising the swar अ to अः with picture words. Some schools also introduce a few vyanjan such as क, ख and ग near the end of the year.

Can a 3 year old do Hindi worksheets?

Yes, if the worksheets are mostly colouring, pointing, matching and big lines. Keep sessions to about five minutes and leave tracing small letters for later.

How many swar are there in Hindi?

Many schools teach 13 swar: अ, आ, इ, ई, उ, ऊ, ऋ, ए, ऐ, ओ, औ, अं and अः. Some books list 11 and treat अं and अः separately, so follow your child’s school book.

Should my child trace Hindi letters with a pencil?

At nursery age, a thick crayon or a finger in a sand tray is better. Pencil tracing usually works well from LKG, once grip and control are stronger.

Why do Hindi worksheets have a line on top?

That line is the शिरोरेखा, the headline. Most Hindi letters hang from it, so practising the headline early helps children place letters correctly later.
