Hindi has two “u” vowels: उ (short u) and ऊ (long oo). When they join a consonant, they turn into matras that hang below the letter, from the bottom of the stem.

Memory trick: draw both matras large on a board. They look alike but face different ways, so let children trace each one with a finger while saying the sound: a quick “u” for ु and a long “oooo” for ू.
The special forms रु and रू
With most letters, the matra hangs under the letter. With र it is different: the matra joins the middle of र on its right side. र + ु = रु (ru), as in रुक and गुरु. र + ू = रू (roo), as in रूप and अमरूद. Practise these two shapes separately.

Common spelling mistakes
- Swapping the two matras: writing दुध instead of दूध, or फुल instead of फूल. Say the word slowly and ask: is the sound short or long?
- Writing the matra under र: रु and रू join the side of र. Practise रुक, गुरु, रूप and अमरूद.
- Confusing ु with ृ: ृ is the ऋ matra, as in कृपा (kripa). It also sits below the letter but makes a “ri” sound.
- Floating matras: the matra must touch the bottom of the letter, not hang loose below it.
- Leaving out the matra in fast dictation: पल instead of पुल. Read every word back after writing.
