What Class 1 Hindi worksheets commonly cover
Most Class 1 Hindi books follow the same journey: letters first, then words without matras, then matras one by one, then sentences. Here is how that usually breaks down.
| Topic | What children practise | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Varnamala revision | Reading and writing स्वर (अ to अः) and व्यंजन (क to ज्ञ) with the शिरोरेखा | क, ख, ग, घ |
| Words without matras | Blending two, three and four letters | घर, कमल, कटहल |
| Matras | Joining each vowel sign to letters, reading and writing matra words | का, कि, की, कु, कू |
| Barakhadi | Saying and writing a letter with every matra | क, का, कि, की, कु, कू, के, कै, को, कौ, कं, कः |
| Sentences | Reading and copying short sentences with a पूर्ण विराम (।) | मोर नाचता है। |
| Opposites | Simple pairs of विलोम शब्द | दिन – रात |
| Gender | Male and female words | लड़का – लड़की |
| Dictation | Writing words and short sentences heard aloud | फूल, पेड़, सेब |
Some schools also teach ृ (as in कृपा and गृह), ँ (chandrabindu, as in चाँद) and ः in Class 1, while others leave them for Class 2. Check your child’s book and add them when the class reaches them.

A common Class 1 mistake is with ि: it is written before the letter but said after it. So दिन is written द with ि in front, but we say “din”. Point this out every time. Our Hindi barakhadi chart shows every letter with every matra if your child needs a reference, and our guide to Hindi matra worksheets has more matra activity ideas.

How to use Hindi worksheets at home without tears
- Keep it short. One page or one list a day is better than five pages on Sunday.
- Read first, write second. Children write matras correctly once they can hear them. Always say the word aloud before writing it.
- One matra at a time. Do not mix ि and ी until both are secure on their own. The same goes for ु and ू.
- Check the शिरोरेखा. Many Class 1 children forget the top line. Draw it in a different colour for a week to build the habit.
- Use real life. Read matras on shop signs, sweet boxes and bus boards. Hindi feels useful when it is everywhere.

It ends with revision pages, reading sentences, a matra tracker and a certificate. If your child still hesitates over letters or simple blending, begin with packs 1 or 2 instead.
